UN Geneva press briefing chaired by Rolando Gómez, Chief, Press and External Relations Section, UN Information Service. Deadly illusion of the Gaza ceasefire. James Elder, for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), speaking from Amman, stated that for many months, the world had been told there was a ceasefire in Gaza. Yet for Palestinian children, this so-called ceasefire had become a cruel, and a deadly, illusion. Since the announcement of the ceasefire in October 2025, 265 Palestinian children had been killed across Gaza. That was an absurd and devastating figure. During a period supposedly defined by restraint and protection, a child had been killed, on average, every single day for more than eight months. Mr. Elder stressed that these children had not been killed in a warzone. They had been killed in their homes, in their schools, playing football, fishing. They had been shot, bombed, stricken by quadcopters. While the world continued to speak the language of ceasefire, f...

UN Geneva press briefing chaired by Rolando Gómez, Chief, Press and External Relations Section, UN Information Service. Update on Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo Dr. Douglas Noble, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Global Lead for Public Health Emergencies and Global Incident Manager for Ebola, who had just returned from Bunia in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), stated that eastern DRC had endured years of conflict, with many children and families displaced, hospitals short on supplies, and people constantly on the move, which made surveillance and response difficult. The situation of children was particularly challenging; in Ituri, more than half of children under five were chronically malnourished and more than one in five were zero-dose children, which meant that they had never received their first dose of the basic diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis vaccine, making them very vulnerable. Past Ebola outbreaks had shown what it could mean for child...

UN Geneva press briefing chaired by Alessandra Vellucci, Director, UN Information Service. Crisis in Lebanon Imran Riza, United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon, speaking from Beirut, said that later today a humanitarian flash appeal would be launched, following the escalating crisis of the past three months, which had led to numerous casualties, displacement, damage, and trauma. More than 3,500 people had been killed, 10,000 injured, and over one million people remained displaced. Entire neighbourhoods had been reduced to rubble, and at least 1.4 million people needed humanitarian aid. Hospitals and clinics had been hit by airstrikes and agricultural land scorched. The psychological trauma of the conflict meant that the emotional scars of the conflict would last long beyond its end. Mr. Riza had recently visited displaced families in the southern city of Tyre, some of whom had been displaced five times, and were simply hoping for stability and return to home. Mr. Riza said...

UN Geneva press briefing chaired by Alessandra Vellucci, Director, UN Information Service. World Meteorological Organization Update on El Niño Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General, World Meteorological Organization (WMO), said the WMO latest El Niño/ La Niña update confirmed that El Niño conditions were developing in the tropical pacific and were expected to influence weather and climate patterns in the months ahead. Experts estimated an 80 percent possibility that El Niño conditions would emerge between June and August 2026, increasing to 90 percent in the remaining forecast period. Most forecast models suggested it would be at least moderate, with the possibility to become strong. El Niño was a main driver of global weather and climate patterns and could cause heatwaves and heavy rainfall. El Niño contributed to 2024 becoming the hottest year on record. No two El Niño events were exactly alike and could vary between regions, including in the form of heavy rainfalls and floods, droughts, ...
