Alessandra Vellucci, Director of the United Nations Information Service (UNIS) in Geneva, said that the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres had issued a statement that unequivocably condemned the massive strikes by Israel across Lebanon on 8 April and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk had also issued a statement on the strikes. UN INFORMATION SERVICE GENEVA PRESS BRIEFING - 27 January 2026 UNICEF: 'Back to Learning' for Hundreds of Thousands of Children in Gaza. James Elder, for the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), said that in one of the largest emergency learning efforts anywhere in the world, UNICEF would now expand its "Back to Learning" programme to include some 336,000 children in Gaza. Before the war, Palestinians in Gaza had some of the highest literacy rates in the world. Today, that legacy was under attack: schools, universities, and libraries had been destroyed, and years of progress erased.   About the Humanitarian situation in Gaza Abeer Etefa, for the World Food Programme (WFP), speaking from Cairo, said that Gaza was facing heavy rains and falling temperatures. Flood waters had washed away many families' meagre possessions and supplies, indicating of what the winter ahead could bring. Hundreds of thousands of people remained in urgent need of food assistance. Access to basic needs items was still very limited, and the rain was making it worse. Since 10 October, WFP had brought in over 40,000 tons of food into Gaza, which amounted to about two-thirds of its monthly target; this had reached over 530,000 people, one-third of the WFP's monthly target. WFP-supported bakeries supported 160,000 bread bundles per day, meeting WFP's daily targets, said Ms. Etefa.
